The Doherty Cup golf tournament
was started in honor of the memory of James F. Doherty, II, who died at
the young age of 58. He truly loved the game of golf - a love that he
passed on to several of his 10 children. The silver mug now known as the
"Doherty Cup" was given to James F. Doherty
in 1970 by his colleagues at General Dynamics in Rochester, NY as a way
of wishing him well during his illness. A few years after his death, his
wife and children decided to hold a golf tournament with the cup as the
prize. The Cup has become a much coveted prize by all who seek it, bringing
the family together in a tradition that now includes another generation
of Doherty golfers.
